Two ways to set up the same WMS
The question 'which WMS' usually comes with a second one that matters just as much: how is my environment set up? Broadly there are two flavours. A shared cloud, where you share software with other clients on the same infrastructure. And a dedicated, isolated environment, where your installation stands on its own.
Neither is better by default. They fit different situations - and as a 3PL, your situation tends to change as you grow.
When shared cloud is enough
For many starting and smaller 3PLs, a shared cloud is the logical start. You're live fast, you don't have to build your own IT setup, and you get updates and security automatically. You pay for what you use and grow along without an infrastructure project.
The flip side: you share the environment, so you have less room for deep custom configuration and you run on the vendor's update pace. For most operations just starting out, the speed easily outweighs those limits.
When your own environment fits better
As you grow, a few things start to weigh more heavily. That's when a dedicated, isolated environment can become the better choice:
- Data separation: you want your data to stand on its own, not shared with other clients.
- Your own brand: your clients should see your identity in portals and tracking, not a vendor's.
- Compliance: you have requirements on where your data sits (region or jurisdiction).
- Your own pace: you want to decide when updates and changes go live, with your own SLA.
- Room for tailoring: your processes need more configuration than a shared environment allows.
Do you have to choose now?
The honest answer: preferably not for good, and you don't have to. The trap is picking a system you can't grow out of without a painful migration. So prefer a platform where shared cloud and a dedicated environment are two editions of the same product - then you move up when the situation calls for it, without switching systems.
